Types of SSL certificates

Currently, there is a wide range of SSL certificates available on the market. Which one is suitable for you and will best meet your needs?

WHAT TYPES OF SSL CERTIFICATES EXIST?

  • DV — Domain Validation — for domain validation;
  • OV — Organization Validation — for organization and domain validation;
  • EV — Extended Validation — for extended organization and domain validation.

WHICH SSL CERTIFICATE TO CHOOSE?

So, we have established that SSL certificates differ not only in brand and price. Today’s range of offers covers a wide range of tasks for which SSL may be required.

For example, if you simply want to protect your website users from intrusive browser warnings about visiting an unverified site, you can obtain a basic DV (Domain Validation) certificate in just a few minutes. However, if you use your website for operations that require a higher level of data security for your company and customers, consider an EV (Extended Validation) certificate. And if you use multiple web addresses for your site or your company’s sites, there are Wildcard certificates available on the market.

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF SSL CERTIFICATES?
Let’s take a closer look at the types of SSL certificates available in the market today. Their differences can be divided into two main groups:

By Verification Method

  • Domain Validation Certificates (DV) confirm that the user is indeed on the exact website whose domain address they have accessed, thereby verifying the web server that serves the site. Such a certificate does not contain information about the company that owns the site and therefore cannot be considered secure enough for commercial transactions. DV certificates are recommended for use on platforms where strict security guarantees are not required.
  • Extended Validation Certificates (EV) have the highest level of trust from other Internet nodes. They are the optimal solution for sites that require strict confidentiality of transmitted data (e.g., for financial transactions). The name of this type of certificate implies extended periodic checking of the site owner’s data to prevent data substitution.

Note: When SSL certificates were initially introduced into the global network, certification authorities provided only certificates with organizational data validation. The appearance of Domain Validation certificates is a result of commercial interests, gradually forcing vendors to issue “simplified” certificates with domain validation only. This has partly played into the hands of internet fraudsters, who often rely on the fact that an internet browser usually does not warn users about possible site authenticity issues if the certificate provided by the site has at least a minimal level of trust.

EV certificates are designed to address this issue. This is achieved by displaying information about the organization that owns the site directly in the client’s address bar in the form of an additional label highlighted in green (Green Bar). Such a label is hard to miss. Now, the user does not need to click on the certificate icon in the browser to get detailed information about it — the most important confirmation can be obtained by simply looking at the address bar. The Green Bar option is supported by all popular web browsers on all current operating systems.
