Why use SSL to read and send email?

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is a protocol that encrypts the connection between your email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, etc.) and the server using a digital certificate, so that third parties cannot see the content of the emails you read or send.
